Why men were doing the role of women in old days?

In old days only men were doing the acting in dramas.Men were dressed up a women for doing the woman role.Men were wearing saree,blouse,wigs,ladies ornaments for ladies role.Girls were also available at that time.But why women were not doing the women role?This thing still happens in some villages.
