Pearl oysters......?

I was watching an episode of Spongebob Squarepants with my little girl this morning and it was the episode with the oyster who had her pearl stolen and wouldn't stop crying. Anywho... that got me to thinking about oysters and pearls. How and why do oysters produce pearls. What are they made of?
