What makes State Troopers tick, y'all?

Why are they so often much more arrogant, condescending, y and downright ornery than municipal cops, for example? Is it a job requirement to act act that way? They are such caricatur-ish, cartoon-ish stereotypes of the worst personality traits of law enforcement officers that I wonder where they're coming from. Any clues, anyone?
